Apr. 20th, 2013 01:03 pmI know my next tattoo: ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΕΑΥΤΟΝ (right upper arm). It's Ancient Greek, from the pediment of the temple to Apollo at Delphi, and means "know yourself" (often written "know thyself", but English has changed in the centuries since that translation).
One of the reasons I love my busking tours is that the time alone, open-minded and constantly adapting to uncertainty, is a hugely spiritual experience for me. I spend a lot of time contemplating past and future as I maneuver in the present, and I learn a lot about myself.
Some of these things are practical: I get anxiety attacks every January, bouts of loneliness every two weeks while traveling alone, and a little bit moody around the full moon. Thankfully all of these things pass with time, which is another important lesson to have learned.
In some ways I'm a bit of a wreck; the neurotic artist is a stereotype for a reason. But I've long since given up on trying to fix myself in favour of simply learning to work around my mental and emotional issues. And when learned adaptations are counterproductive, I change them.
And so far, for the most part, it seems to be working ok.
