Wow, it’s been a very busy two weeks and I haven’t posted in awhile. I’ll try to keep this brief yet detailed, though it might be tricky.

After I scheduled three days in Trent I found regulations online that seemed to indicate that the city wouldn’t work for me. Last year they passed a series of laws against busking in the city’s pedestrian center, restricting it to the outskirts (which get little foot traffic). Since I was already booked for lodging I decided to busk anyway, figuring I could play ignorance if I got shifted. Friday night, my first in town, was brief due to a rain shower and the Saturday was brief due to a friendly but firm police officer. It didn’t go badly, however, and on Sunday I performed with great success in the nearby town of Rovereto for the church crowd.

From Trent I headed south to the plains, where I spent three days in Reggio Emilia. Reggio was on my original list of cities to try, and while the pedestrian setup is a little strange (some of their “limited traffic zones” aren’t very limited) it went well from the perspective of the law. The fact that it was over 100 degrees wasn’t helpful, however, and I hadn’t expected the traditional Italian vacation period to have started quite so soon. August is legendary for the exodus of Italians, but the last two weeks of July seem to be pretty similar.

After Reggio I went home to Genova, the place that I picture when I imagine my “happy place”. Once again I noticed that traffic wasn’t what I was used to, so I headed to the nearby Riviera city of Final Ligure on Friday night. Resort towns aren’t the best busking, I discovered, but are certainly stunning to visit! While the weekend’s busking wasn’t what I’d hoped for it still wasn’t bad, especially since I got to spend it in my favorite place on earth.

I had an amazing finish to the trip, culminating in a wander around Milan the night before leaving Italy. I finally found the interesting neighborhoods, particularly the Navogli district based around a medieval canal system. I had an amazing appetizer buffet (accompanied by a really good strawberry daiquiri) sitting on a barge in the middle of a canal watching the water stream past two feet away. Heavenly.

I'm now back in the States, totally jetlagged and too exhausted to sleep. I'm thrilled to be heading to Pennsic on Wednesday, and glad to be back after quite the adventuresome trip; I'll be happy to tell you about it over a drink. The drink part is not optional. But I made it, and my things made it, and all is well that ends well!
