Good, Bad, and the Beautiful
Jul. 18th, 2009 09:46 pmI knew when I came to town that busking wasn't permitted outside of certain (bad traffic) areas, but unfortunately I hadn't know that when I booked it. I figured that I'd come and busk until I was officially told what the rules were, I just wish I'd gotten more playing in before that happened. Still, I did play a half hour yesterday before the rain started, and I got in a good 45 minute set tonight. There's a nearby town that I'm going to play tomorrow morning, which is total terra incognita and could go any which way. I'm hopeful; after church audiences tend to really respond well to my quieter music.
On a walk tonight, however, all was made up for. I'm really sorry this city doesn't work for me professionally because it really is beautiful. A lovely medieval city nestled in the foothills of the Alps, which sets a high standard, and with the possible exception of Salzburg (which is really more Baroque) Trent outclasses them all. Even better, I came across a piazza that had been filled with sand and bleachers where there was a calcio (soccer) game going on, complete with barefoot players! I don't know if it was seeing it live, seeing semi-professionals instead of polished pros, or the weird effect that the sand had on the way the ball bounced and the way players' feet moved, but it was absolutely fascinating to watch.
After a bit of spectating I meandered along only to come across a Baroque church filled with the sound a choir singing "Lean On Me". I was impressed, and ducked in for a little bit to indulge my neglected audience impulses some more. I'm starting to realize that I only have a week left here, and I'm already getting alternately wistful and eagerly planning my next viaggio!
