I had an absolutely splendid week!  On Wednesday I went up to Boston to give it my European treatment, basically getting myself lost and then finding my way unlost and in the process getting a pretty good experience of downtown.  It was absolutely spectacular, and I really reveled in the time to myself as I explored some of the neatest areas (particularly cemeteries) I’ve seen in the US.

Boston has a “Freedom Trail” that links many historic sites with a trail of red bricks, and I traced the entire thing at some point or another, wandering off and then finding my way back onto another section several times.   I just wish that they didn’t save the 294 steps of the Bunker Hill monument obelisk for the end of the trail, when you’re already a bit winded.  By the time I got back down I was ready for some quality time with a park bench.

I was pleasantly surprised to get some pretty good gelato from a street corner vender in Downtown Crossing.  Even so, I have to confess that a highlight of the afternoon was getting a haircut in Boston’s North End.  I’ve been disappointed with my last two cuts, but the Ukrainian gentleman did a fantastic job!  When I stepped in the door and heard him speaking something vaguely Slavic on the phone I knew I’d found a good place – my best haircuts have all been by non-Americans.

Wednesday night I met up with my good friends Paul and Natasha and spent the night at their place north of Boston.  On Thursday morning Paul and I headed back into the city for a good walk and some excellent banter before we headed to a gig in the early evening.  We, along with several other friends, had been hired as costumed medieval helpers for a corporate event and I had an absolute blast playing games with tipsy young corporate types.

Sprinkled throughout, of course, were various episodes of Battlestar Gallactica, which Paul has been getting me into over the course of the past two weeks.  I won’t say I’m hooked, since I have no qualms about missing episodes or partial episodes between viewings, but I have to admit that it’s very well done and incredibly entertaining.  I expect to see quite a bit more over the next ten weeks as we continue to live in close proximity.

This afternoon the word came down that Hurricane Kyle had already put the kibosh on the festival for tomorrow, so groups of us are making plans for what to do with ourselves.  Whatever we decide, I’m sure it will be fun!
