Lyrics and Life
Mar. 30th, 2013 01:05 pmYou've got a know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away, know when to run
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealings done
-Kenny Rogers, The Gambler
I always thought that this was pretty meaningless advice, which is part of the song's point. It's not the fact that you need to know these things but how to know these things that's the trick. But then there's that last bit, the part that always throws me. Never evaluate your progress until you've reached a stopping point because an unfinished project is always discouraging. I have a terrible habit of second guessing myself, but there'll be time enough for counting when the dealing's done.
