Giving Thanks
Nov. 25th, 2010 09:02 pmI love ritual. I wish I liked the papacy better because I think Catholics have pretty much nailed religion; if it isn't magic on some level then what's the bloody point? I drift towards the line when rituals border on superstitions, but as a performer that seems to be par for the course since I've been chastised for whistling backstage ("you are in a THEATRE!") and thrown out of a gas station for saying the name of the "Scottish Play" ("spit, swear, turn around three times, and ask permission to reenter").
I adore life's little rituals. I've recently taken up wearing hats, both in renaissance garb and in daily life, and the series of rules about when to tip and doff a hat fascinate me. I leave the bottom button of my vest undone. And I give thanks every night before bed.
I have a list of blessings that I go through as a short litany. When I was studying Italian I started saying it in translation, and I've recently done the same in Greek. I am thankful, in no particular order, for good weather, good health, my music, business profits, safe travels, the beauty of the world, the love in my life, and the many opportunities I've been given.
I don't really feel the need to set aside a special day for this, and the past few years I've spent the day in airports taking advantage of cheap Thanksgiving Day flights, but it's nice to feel that the rest of my country is joining me in a cycle of positive energy. I hope we can all keep it going for awhile.
