The biggest conundrum for the performers at the Festival Fantastika here in Freistadt has been a lack of internet (which is saying a lot of positive things about festival management), so it’s been a few days since I’ve posted anything. It’s been a real pleasure to perform here, and I’m very glad they had me. As a bonus, not only was the festival good to me, but street busking in Linz also went well. I’ve been hesitant about performing in Austria, but my experience in Linz has me extra-excited to head to Salzburg and Innsbruck and then to return next summer.

One of the coolest things ever to happen to me in Europe had nothing to do with performing. I was at the bus station, checking departure times, and I heard the soundtrack for Star Wars coming from a nearby building. Thinking there was a screening I wandered through the open doors, only to find an orchestra rehearsing the music of John Williams. I said to myself, “that’s cool” and turned to leave, just as they jumped into the Imperial March. Hearing that live, in a great room, sent my inner geek straight to heaven.

On another note, a few days ago my very good friend Paul Hudert, aka “Paolo Garbanzo”, joined us in Linz. We’ve been telling each other for years that we needed to get together in Italy sometime, and while that’s still ahead of us we came a lot closer than we ever have before! This is my first Paul sighting since last December, which is funny because we’ll camp near each other at Pennsic and live together for fourteen weeks in Massachusetts and Louisiana. It has been a real pleasure as always.

He and the Aerial Angels are headed into the Czech Republic for a few days before returning to Austria for another festival. I’m headed west and south, so there’s a bit of bittersweetness in parting. Still, I’m really excited about seeing new places and performing for new audiences!
