I found a Tuscan pitch. At least I'm pretty sure I have; I won't rule out a misunderstanding but things are looking really good. To recap:
Florence: no busking except by permit, in designated locations, during restricted (and bad) hours
Siena: no busking except by permit, in designated locations
Viareggio: no busking during Carnevale (and there's no other reason to go to Viareggio since I'm not a fan of beaches)
Lucca: no busking except for one place in Piazza San Michele (which is both a bad pitch and always taken by some other busker)
Prato: no busking except by permit, no selling of CDs
Pistoia: no permit necessary, lots of pedestrian areas, no mention of CDs by the polizia who taked to me, the one rule they pointed out was not to hog the pitch and move along after an hour or so.
I finally found a good city, thank heavens. I'm one stubborn son of a gun, and Tuscany was the only province of Italy I've performed but had yet to find a pitch to meet my standards (obtaining a permit in the bureaucratic nightmare that is Italy is generally futile unless you have a few days to spare). I had a great day busking, and did really well since today was market day. Markets are generally really good for traffic but it's usually hard to find a place to play since booths tend to take up every possible space. I found a spectacular pitch this morning, however, and then had some pretty good luck this evening. I am totally wiped out, but elated.
